Hey, Tribers -

My name is Jason.

I am in Miami, Florida ;0) This is a shout-out - ;0) I'd love some help.

I am just beginning "Eating Awake" - on the move since February 8th. As I move deeper - I run into bumps on my road. I don't have a reference for eating this way, beyond the book ;0) So its quite new - but I'm attempting to wade in with both feet. And to me, the author, the book and you lovely people here seem the best current resource.

Right now I'm keeping things very simple, out of necessity, and watching my monies. Budget at the moment - soon this should ease, some. Present diet?

Eggs. Ground Beef. Green Juice. Silicated water. Bits of cheese. Supplemental Coconut oil/Olive Oil (good ones). And an occasional day of "wtf?" like, today. ;0) because I short-shopped myself (whups!), and I seem to currently be unable to obtain anything of any 'quality' (re: organic. . grassfed. . .fresh) if it is not purchased in advance. Sigh. Anywho...

How responsive are we, here? I'd like to be able to ask questions when I hit turbulence ;0)

Our Friend Reports: Herpes, Heat and Dampness in the Lower Burner

Dealing with Damp Heat in the Lower Burner (including Herpes, Chlamydia and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

Notice: The information presented here is provided for any of us choosing to take full responsibility for our health and wellness. Each of us is fully responsible for finding means of healing which work.

The information presented here is derived from three sources: 1) Paul Pitchford, author of Healing With Whole Foods, revised edition, specifically pages 399 - 400; Pitchford cautions that use of his recommendations should not limit one's pursuit of allopathic medical care (medical drugs); some forms of sexually transmitted disease, including syphilis, can lead to blindness or death. 2) Aajonus Vonderplanitz, author of Primal Diet, revised edition, 2005, specifically pages 271 - 272). Mo Lohaus, author of Eating Awake, currently in revision.

1) Pitchford: Herbal teas. Equal parts of: Sarsaparilla, Dandelion and Gentian roots, decocted (boiled). If stools become loose, use ony Sarsaparilla. Sarsaparilla is a diaphoretic (induces sweating), Dandelion is blood purifier, and Gentian helps oxygenate the tissues.

Diet: Avoid all intoxicants (including coffee and tobacco), all concentrated sweeteners (except stevia), all fruits (including tomato), all nuts (especially peanuts), and oil bearing seeds (including sesame, but excluding flax, and its cold pressed oil). Avoid spirulina, but Chlorella and Wild Blue Green Algae are useful. Practice exacting food combining -- one food per meal, with the addition of green and non-starchy vegetables if desired.

Other therapies: Oxygenation and ozone can be helpful.

Topical: Bathe in strong black tea during outbursts.

Course of treatment: At least 6 months. If no lesions have appeared for 6 weeks prior to the 6 month mark, gently adding small amounts of fruit, goat dairy or other animal products may be attempted.

2) Vonderplanitz:

«Herpes is an inflamation of the skin or mucous membranes characterized by clusters of blisters that seem to spread. This is sometimes a condition that results from taking medication during chicken pox, or from taking the small pox vaccine. Another cause is a very high adrenaline saturation (volatile toxic condition) in the nerve endings.

«For six weeks, drinking 1 level teaspoon of powdered sun-dried clay in 2 - 6 ounces of mineral water or fresh raw juice helps attract and absorb toxins that cause herpes. Eating raw fresh fish and raw chicken several times weekly with no-salt-added raw cheese and an equal portion of unsalted raw butter for eight weeks helps soothe and heal the nerves. Eating fresh raw unripe pineapple with unheated honey relieves soreness. For many years thereafter, and in general, following a balanced primal diet, mainly utilizing alkalizing foods, helps heal the liver and other affected areas. See Alkalizing Foods, page 178.»

«Alkalizing Food neutralizes acidity and volatile toxins, refreshing an acidic and toxic body. Except for wheat grass juice, all edible raw fresh vegetable juices, raw fruits and raw fresh fruit puree are alkalizing. Raw fresh tomatoes, raw fresh figs, raw fresh pineapple, raw fresh lemons and raw fresh parsley are the most alkalizing. Alkalizing foods do not need to be eaten together or eaten exclusively except for during particular ailments. But if they are included -- when you desire them or have a toxic problem -- in a balanced raw diet, physical, emotional and mental life will be easier. Although tomatoes, apples, citrus fruit and raw unpasteurized apple cider vinegar are considered acidic, they alkalize the blood and body. See pages 201 and 213 - 216 about acidic and volatile toxic compounds.»

3) Lohaus:

The recommendation about clay -- use french green -- is an excellent one. Clay is very highly negatively charged and has a huge surface area -- it has been used for millennia to attract, bond and remove many toxic substances and disruptive biological agents from the human body. Use clay in water every day for six to eight weeks.

The herbal formula may work well. Drying and cooling herbs like Dandelion may work well for those of us who are not too thin or cold already. Paul's herbal formulas tend to be very effective. Use this tea at least twice a day for three weeks, then one week off. If desired, do another course. Using a dissolved oxygen product between meals (like Aerobic 07) may be very useful too.

Both of these formulas address the issue of the liver -- in most systemic infection there is impaired liver function. The recommendations to avoid all fruit, alcohol and sweeteners fit in with this -- the liver can produce its own carbohydrates, and when functioning well, will. Carbohydrate consumption can throw the liver off, and actively feeds parasitic infections. Any food which cannot be fully digested will leave digestive wastes which can be used by our infections as fuel. Paul's recommendations about narrowing the range of a vegan diet are a good one, and do not conflict with some of Aajonus' recommendations: Most raw animal foods are digested extremely efficiently. But eat them alone. No raw dairy with other animal meats as Aajonus recommends. His clients tend to show patterns of dampness -- a direct result of poor food combining, especially involving sweet foods (in Taoist medicine butter and cream are concentrated sweets).

Similarly, Aajonus' recommendations about alkalizing juices are excellent -- but avoid the fruit juices. Celery, parsley and romaine lettuce can be plenty alkalizing. Adding chlorella or wild blue green algae, with artichoke extract (Jarrow artichoke 500) could make a very alkalizing, cleansing morning or evening drink. Very bitter citrus (limes, lemons (not Meyer lemons, which are half oranges), grapefruit) and pineapple MIGHT be tolerable or useful -- use a few drops of juice in a glass of water as alkalizers.

How about alkalizing foods? Mung bean sprouts are excellent. Soak them for 24 - 48 hours, then soak and rinse them 3 times a day. As soon as they rootlet separates from the seed they can be eaten -- very crispy and tasty. Make them by the pound. Mung beans and aduki beans are both drying and purifying. Mungs particularly dry damp heat. Mix them in a salad with cucumbers, raw sauerkraut, traditional pickles, lettuce and onion family vegetables. Dress with extra virgin olive oil or flax oil. They can be eaten in volume.

Nuts have a high arginine level and can be a problem. Sunflower seeds, fresh, raw, shelled and sprouted, might be fine. Especially if sprouted and cultured into sunflower cheese. See Eating Awake for the recipe. Sprouted sesame seeds might be fine too -- though they are warming, especially in a salad with mung bean sprouts and some soaked seaweeds -- like kombu or wakame. Seaweeds tend to be cooling and alkalizing. Spirulina is exceptional due to its polysaccharide cell wall and thus should be avoided. Dulse is rich in iodine and might be useful.

Tofu is also cooling and alkalizing. Most soymilk and ricemilk are sweetened and WAY TOO SWEET. The only soy sauce to even consider is Nama Shoyu, which is a true probiotic. Due to allergies to soy, it might be best to avoid soy entirely. Any inflammation will only perpetuate the infection.

A mild vegan probiotic is miso. It is possible to get barley miso, instead of soy. Use unpasteurized and be sure not to cook it. Simmer onions and other veggies in a little extra virgin olive oil then add water. Bring close to boiling, turn off the heat, add a big whopper tablespoon or two of miso. Allow to soften five minutes and stir in well. Avoid metal pots and utensils if possible.

The entire garlic family has both probiotic and antiviral properties. Unfortunately, they are strongly warming. See if they work for you. Their high sulfur content tends to be purifying. An alternative source of useful sulfur is MSM -- methyl sulfonyl methane -- a supplement used in joint injuries. It occurs naturally in many foods, and the supplement is derived from pine trees. It shows excellent results for those of us in chronic pain and has shown no side effects. OptiSim MSM from Jarrow. Just throw a teaspoon in a glass of water a few times a day and notice the results.

If the garlic family seem helpful -- Garlic, Onions, Chives, Green Onions -- they are most potent when eaten raw. Onions are the easiest to eat in volume. Make a wrap out of hummus or bean dip in either lettuce or a nori sheet. Load on the chopped onions. Do this several times a day. Onions can also be juiced with celery or cabbage. A little goes a long way.

Mushrooms may be useful too. Maitake, shitake, and oyster all have documented anti-viral properties; they are best eaten raw. Mushrooms are often too cooling for vegans.
If they feel right, use them.

Foods rich in sulfur are all good: Cabbage, Rutabagas, Leeks, Onions, Turnips, Kale. Raw or juiced they are outstanding. Mix them with celery or romaine lettuce when juicing and they will be more mild.

When confronted with viral infection, avoid sweets, sweeteners, fruit, dried fruit, fruit juice, carrot juice, beet juice, apple juice, sweetened cranberry juice, cooked carrots, parsnips, beets or squash, etc. For hydration use celery juice -- it specifically dries dampness, which includes many infections.

Grated cabbage can be used as a poultice on viral infections on the skin. Green clay can be a useful pack as well. Garlic can be chopped fine and placed in a small vial
of olive oil and used topically as well -- probably too hot for the mouth or genitals, though it works great on earaches as well as skin fungus.

Vinegar in salads may or may not be a good idea -- it is warming as well as alkalizing. Generally, raw unsalted sauerkraut is very helpful.

Avoiding yeast and wheat is definitely a good idea when confronting infection. Millet is a much better grain for those of us in this situation. Soak it for hours then rinse it until the white coating is totally released and the water runs clear thru it, before cooking. Once it is cooked it can be refried in a pan with olive oil, whole unrefined sea salt and onions: yum!

A final herbal asset might be burdock root. Burdock is very powerful immune cleanser. Rather than using dry herbs, if the fresh root is available, small quantities, say one cubic inch, in a daily green drink, might be very useful. More if it feels good. Both burdock and sunchoke, tubers indigenous to the Americas, have potent healing properties and are kind in cases of lymphatic / immune problems.

Finding purifying cleansing foods and fluids can be key in removing viral infections. The balancing piece is the inclusion of nourishing fats and protein to rebuild the cells. Many of us require more fat and protein than we get. Paleos can simply eat more raw fish or chicken, raw cheese, beef or butter -- eggs are very moistening and might be best suspended until signs of dampness have passed. Vegans must often be more deliberate, because vegetable foods do not contain balanced amino acids, from which protein is synthesized. Rich fat sources are also scarce in vegan diet. Using sprouted or cultured sunflower seeds, sprouted sesame seeds, sprouted mung beans, seaweeds and flax oil can be very important for vegans. Miso soup with tofu. Cultured hummus and bean dip. By cutting out most carbohydrates we become aware that we are truly hungry. It is important to feed that hunger. By balancing building and cleansing foods we may purify ourcells effectively -- often the crucial step after figuring out what to cut out from our diet is the step of deciding what to actively include. We must choose to nourish ourcells. Start there.

vomiting and dehydration, help..!

I’m reposting this.. I just sent it to the yahoo primal diet group.

Hello everyone,

I’ve been very sick since yesterday morning… it started after eating some goat cheese of which I was unaware of being pasteurized as the lady I got it from accidentally gave me the wrong order.. I got sick within 10mins of eating it and so I think it is this that is the cause.. by early afternoon I started vomiting which continued nearly every half hour to every hour until I was dry heaving mucus and it did not end until 3AM… by which point I was so thirsty I just downed a quart of water shortly after and surprisingly I haven’t thrown up since though the water does not really feel as though it is settling well.. I think my electrolytes are really off as I’m getting bad cramps in my legs. I don’t have any mineral water yet but I think that would help and might be better than regular water.. with maybe some fresh ginger juice. I tried taking some French green clay and that helped a little.. I need some suggestions to get some electrolytes back into me and what to eat…as I’ve never once been sick like this since back in my cooked food days. I don’t know what Aajonus suggests as I lent all of his books to a friend.. so I don’t even have that to look up.

Honey doesn’t settle well in my stomach normally.. so I don’t dare try that. A small amount of green apple juice, green pineapple or green papaya juice diluted in some water sounds like a possibility.. maybe even a little ACV… Egg whites also sound good for their saltiness and would maybe help bind to some of the toxins.. though I don’t think I can handle any fats right now… Kefir would probably be good later down the road but considering it was dairy that made me ill the thought of it is not very appealing at the moment.. Has anyone tried vegetable juice after being sick like this and what kind…or would that make detox even worse?

I’m open to any suggestions…

Thanks,
Jena

Also...for those who are interested, an Eating Awake Workshop -- likely three, two-hour evening sessions, are scheduled for April or early May at UC Berkeley, through Students for Integrative Medicine. The exact dates have yet to be determined. The workshop will provide support and guidance in conducting various sorts of self-guided dietary transitions -- anything from junkfood to healthfood, to or from the animal or vegetable kingdoms. Class size will be limited. Contact Mo to register.

The prerequisite for the course is to have read the Second Edition of Eating Awake, likely out in February or March, so that our time can be used for clarification and refinement of a personally engaging process rather than «covering the material». The book is well-enough written that it should be understandable and applicable to many of us with defined dietary goals.

Developments will be posted, on the Eating Awake Tribe at Tribe.net.

Our Friend Reports: Fats and Folicles: Hair Loss, Balding and the Kidneys

Fats and Folicles: Hair Loss, Balding and the Kidneys

Premature hair loss and balding are thought of in Taoist Medicine as related to the kidneys. «The kidneys manifest in the head hair.» -- Su Wen.

Our Friend reports thinning of the head hair, frequent coldness and sluggishness. These three symptoms fit a kidney deficiency pattern. The kidneys are referred to as «The temple of fire and water» -- they are understood to warm and energize the body and give rise to the will. The kidneys also rule sexual functions.

Western science has discovered that premature hair loss is a function of the over- abundance of dihydrotestosterone, a testosterone derivative catalyzed by the prostate. As prostate health in the West deteriorates (one in seven men now gets prostate cancer), hair problems increase.

«Studies show that while balding men don't have higher than average circulating testosterone levels, they do possess above-average amounts of a powerful testosterone derivative, dihydrotestosterone in the scalp follicles…

«The conversion from testosterone to DHT is driven by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is produced in the prostate, various adrenal glands, and the scalp. Over time, the action of DHT causes the hair follicle to degrade and shortens the anagen phase. Thought the follicle is technically still alive and connected to a good blood supply--it can successfully nurture a transplanted follicle which is immune to the effects of DHT--it will grow smaller and smaller (figure 3). Some follicles will gradually die, but most will simply shrink to the size they were when you were born which produce weaker hairs. With a steadily shorter anagen growing cycle, more hairs are shed, the hairs becoming thinner and thinner until they are too fine to survive daily wear and tear. Balding hair gradually changes from long, thick, coarse, pigmented hair into fine, unpigmented vellus sprouts.

«However, the sebaceous gland attached to it remains the same size. As the hair shafts become smaller, the gland continues to pump out about the same amount of oil. So as your hair thins, you will notice that your hair becomes flatter and oilier.

«But the hormonal link in balding is complex. Eunuchs, who produce no testosterone, never go bald -- even if carrying a baldness gene. However, if castrated men with a family history of baldness are given testosterone, they lose hair in the classic horseshoe-shaped pattern. »

-- Hair Loss Book

Unless Our Friend has himself castrated, his hair loss will likely proceed -- unless of course he addresses the underlying organ issue: the malnourishment of the kidneys.

It has been found in modern people that the kidneys become dysfunctional when the diet includes: Excessive Omega 6 oils, deficient Omega 3 oils and deficient cholesterol. Yes, cholesterol, that magical substance from which the nervous system is built and which constitutes 60% of the brain. Healthy kidneys are usually swaddled in the richest, most concentrated fat of the body. The kidney / adrenal complex is the site of significant hormone production; when inadequate fats are available, this hormone production cannot proceed. Apparently the prostate react to this condition as equivalent to old age -- in old age due to reduced enzyme levels there is less efficient fat digestion and storage, and frequently this impacts are ability to produce hormones, including regulatory hormones. Relatively speaking, the production of 5-alpha reductase rises. Hormones exist in balance. By starving ourcells of fats we throw off that balance and force our bodies to act as if they are old, before their time.

A Chinese friend mentions that his grandfather, a peasant, who ate simply of many whole animal foods, including raw eggs and cured pork, had thick black hair in his nineties. Both his sons, who lived in the US and ate modern food were balding in their forties. The Taoists recommend both eggs and pork as benefitting the kidneys -- the salty flavor, not from table salt, but from naturally salty foods, like eggs, pork, seafood and sea vegetables, benefits the kidneys.

The old man's diet was rich in healthy fat: Rich in cholesterol in utilizable form. Cooked fats are far less digestible than raw ones, and their metabolic byproducts cause havoc in our glandular and circulatory systems. Societies in which raw fat consumption is high -- from cured pork, pickled fish, raw eggs, raw meat, raw unpasteurized dairy -- tend to have very few deficiency related diseases and low rates of cancer.

According to Mary Enig, PhD, author of Know Your Fats: The Complete Primer for Understanding the Nutrition of Fats, Oils, and Cholesterol, an imbalance of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet causes renal damage -- damage to the kidneys.

In this particular case Our Friend reports that the fat in his diet comes primarily from peanut butter. According to The Peanut Institute, a one ounce serving of peanuts contains 4.5 grams of Omega 6 fatty acids and less than .1 grams of Omega 3 fatty acids. Our Friend should definitely stop eating peanuts.

In primitive people, the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids is one to one, according to Dr.Cosmas Ho. The decline in Omega 3 oils in civilized societies has seen the rise of diseases which now kill two thirds of us, including cancer and heart disease.

What could Our Friend eat instead? Raw oily ocean fish, like wild salmon or tuna. Raw dairy products from grassfed cattle (strictly grainfed cattle produce dairy with skewed fat contents, lacking in CLA -- conjugated linoleic acid -- shown to be highly beneficial in fat deficiency diseases); raw unpasteurized butter, milk, cream or cheese. Fatty meats from grassfed livestock -- chicken or beef. Raw eggs. Organic coconut oil. Organic flax oil.

How much could he safely eat? Plenty. What should he watch out for? Salt. Many of us are supersaturated with sodium chloride from table salt. High salt levels elevate blood pressure. Poor quality fats coat and weaken our blood vessels. The combination of high fluid pressure and poor quality pipes leads to heart attacks, hemarrhoids, varicose veins, aneurysms and strokes. Improving quality fat intake while decreasing salt intake can be healthy and wise. Addressing copper and other mineral imbalances may be important as well. See the first edition of Eating Awake , recipes and resources section, under hemarrhoids.

Sour foods dissolve fatty plaques and increase in the digestion of fat. Salad dressings containing oil often contain vinegar. Our Friend would do well to use raw organic apple cider vinegar (such as Braggs) -- many other vinegars contain sulfites. Sulfites are known to trigger extreme reactions, including asthma attacks, in an assumed 5% of the US population. Other useful sour foods: Raw sauerkraut, lemon juice or lime juice.

Local resources: Western Grasslands Beef. Rosie Organic Chicken. Kaki Farms Eggs, Fresh Catch Salmon or Highland Hills Beef (Berkeley Farmers' Market). Organic Pastures Butter and Cream. Tree of Life Coconut Oil. Spectrum or Barleans Organic Cold Pressed Flax Oil. Swiss Gruyere or French Fourme D'Ambert Cheeses (The Coffee Mill). Unless noted, these items are all available from Berkeley Bowl or Whole Foods.

A final note: Hair, like skin, and much of our tissue, is made of protein. Eating sufficient protein is essential to healthy hair growth.

Hello all. I'm new to this tribe and wondering if anyone knows if the tribe was named after a book. I can't find it listed on the web. Can you help?

Thank you!

I'm Eating!

Friends! This is thread is all about what you're eating today. And what bodily reactions it prompts:

Here's mine:

Wake up at 5. Nice Dump.

5:30: Drink 20 ounces of hot spring water.

6:30: Drink 16 ounces of celery juice (one huge bunch of celery, juiced) -- drink maybe 6 ounces of water with that, as the second part, mostly leaves is very bitter.

6:45: Dump number two. Very thorough.

7:30: 8 - 12 ounces of aged, fermented liver and kidney fat. Very rich. Tangy and tingly. Takes about forty five pleasurable minutes to eat entirely.

8-12:00: Satisfied and relaxed. Plenty of concentration for dealing with tedious computer stuff.

12:00 Definitely hungry again.

12 - 1:00 Skateboard to Berkeley Bowl and score 7 pounds of chicken. A beautiful sunny day, the board is springy, the turns crisp. Feeling like a kid.

1:00 PM: Chicken Shake. Maybe 1.5 pounds of chicken cut off of legs in a blender with a pint of water and 3 capsules of vegetal silica. Creamy and kind. The friendly pink drink. Aaaah.

4:30 Hungry again, writing this.

5:00 PM: Chicken Shake #2. Same details as before. Maybe bite off the ends of the bones and slurp the marrow. Maybe leave them for breakfast or later tonight.

5:30 - 8:00 PM: Yoga, listening to Jan Garbarek and Ustad Fateh Ali Khan: Ragas and Sagas. Sweet! Then some Hassan Hakmoun and Amjad Ali Khan. Love that sitar.

8:00 PM perhaps a little snack of those chicken bones or more liver and fat before bed, to keep the emotional setting deep for dreaming, and plenty of fuel for intense consciousness. A long-winter's night. Nighty night.
